Cricket.

The Waimate Cricket Club opened { the New Year with two matches, one at Timaru and the other at Winchester. The weather was excellent for cricket and both matclias proved most enjoyable. In the former Waimate suffered defeat by 17 runs. Afternoon tea was provided by Timaru and was very acceptable. The following are the scorer.— •; TIMAEU. First Innings. In tho match Waimafce v. Winchestcr..the latter went in first, but could maae only 33 against tho splendid bowling of Thomas and Goldstone. Tho fielding of tho Waimate club was clean and effective, seven men being caught out. Waimate replied with 174, Thomas batting splendidly for 123 notout. In thoir second innings Winchester made 53, thus leaving Waimate victorious by an innings and 87 runs. Tho Winchester team did all in their power to make the stay of the visitors enjoyable. Afternoon tea was supplied by Miss Langdon. On January 2 the Waimate club played Temuka, the latter ginning by 23 runs. Temuka weni in first and scored 97. Waimate replied with 74, and though Temuka had a second timings there wasnot time for Waimate to do so, tie match thus being decided on the first innings. The Temuka scores are crowded out. The second tpsb match between Australia and England began 'at Melbourne on, Now Year’s Day, 25,000 spectators being preset. Heavy rain foil the previous night, and the wiekej was soft. MacLaren won the tos; and put the Australians in. j The' wicket cut up rather badlyl suiting the English bowlers Baipes and Blythe, who bowled throughout the Australian first innings Only four Australians reached dovble figures and of these Duff, a neV man, made top score. They played very cautiously, trying to keep their wickets up till the call of time as the pitch was improving rapidly. However, five wickets were down for 48 al the call of time but the bast bats were reserved till next day, when the pitch was dry. On January 2 Hill and Gregory commenced batt ing, and Hill gave one of his sensational displays, compiling 99. Dull also showed good form, being not out with 71. These two batsmen saved their side from a poor innings.
