Mr Leonard Price ia at present staying in Waimate for a few days. Mr C. J. Jackson was a passenger for Christchurch by yesterday’s express. Mr George Pitcai'hly, rector of tho Waimate Diadict High School, leaves Waimate to-day on a visit to Australia. Mr P. M. Twom?y, the secretary of the Irish Federation of Wellington, has sent the following cablegram to Mr William O’Brien, M.P., who is now at Melbourne :— ■“ The Irish Federation, Wellington, extend hearty welcome to yourself and Mrs O’Brien on arrival in Australia. We wish that vour visit may benefit your health. Hope you will visit New Yealand. whoa we can say : “ Caed Mille Fail' he.” Tim London Correspondent of tho Auckland Star says that tho New Zealand soprano, Miss Mabel Manson, scored a big success at Manchester. At tho first Harrison concert at the Free Trade Hall, on October 23rd, Madame Patti was prevented by a chill from singing, and Mr Harrison specially engaged Miss Manson to take Patti's place. The New Zealand eop'-auo rose to the occasion. Her singing of Sullivan’s “My Dearest Heart,"Meyerbeer’s “ Roberto,” “Oh tu die Adoro,’ 1 and Needham's “The ' Fairies’ Lullaby” won the approval, oi both audience and critics. The latter praise her fresh, clear, welltrainad soprano void? end graceful stylo, and declare she justified her engagement from every point of view.

Lieu'enant-Colonel Hutton, the new FMoral Commandant, sails from Loudon by the Austral. His headquarters will probi.bly be Melbourne. He was born in ISIS, and joined the 60th BuFs iu 1867. attaining his colonelcy in FSJ2. He served through the Zuiu wav. was m unioned in despatches and received the medal tor the battle oi Gingihlovo; the Boer war; the Egyptian wav, and the Nile war in 1884, In tho Boer and Egyptian wars ho commanded mounted infantry, and in the latter acted as Military Secretary, and was present at Alexandria and Tel-el-Kebir, receiving the medal and star, and being mentioned in despatches. In tho Nile expedition again .Major Hutton commanded mounted infantry. After some years of staff duty he raised tho Mounted Infantry Brigade at Aldershot in 1838, and commanded it till 1892, when he took over the command of the military forces in New South Vales. Daring the period of this command, until 1893, he acted as president of military conferences in Australia. General Hutton was then two years Assistant Adjutant General in Ireland, aftc-r which he took command of the Dominion of Canada Militia. This command he held until going to South Africa last year.
