Caledonian Society.
A general meeting of the above was held in the Royal Hotel on Saturday evening last, Mr G. S. Mathias (president) in the chair, and a good numbft of members present. In discussion on the programme for Boxing Day, Mr Goldstone brought up the question of substituting trophies for cash in the children’sevents. Ha said this was in order that boys and girls might not otherwise be debarred from competing in the large school ingTha suggestion was agreed to. The Chairman read a letter from the Waimate Amateur Athletic Association, asking that they include several events for amateurs. He said tha letter was received after the programme had been arranged, otherwise it would probably have been favourably considered.
Messrs A. Philip, J. W. Manchester, A. Meyers, junr., were proposed as members of the Society. The following officials were elected : —Patrons: His Worship the Mayor, Messrs R. Garaeron and A. McLean. Hammer, ball and caber* Messrs Jno. Ross, A. Rattray, junr., T. Smith, K. McLennan and H. Saunders. Jumping: Messrs W. Cochrane, J. Cochrane, D. McLean, S. Medlicott a id E. Cosgrave. Cycling; Messrs Goldstone, Grant, Atwill and Manchester.
Running: Messrs Hertslet, Free* man, Cameron, Cowan, Fox, Quinn, Glendinning and Miller. Wrestling: Messrs O'Leary, M. O’Brien, A. Paterson, G. McLean, F. Westphall, T. Twornoy and M. Thyne. Bagpipe Music and Dancing- Messrs A, Martin, Fraser, J. H. Mitchell, D. McLennan, A. Rattray, J. Munro and P. Sinclair. Irish Dancing: Messrs P, McCarthy, J. Cagney, M. Thyne, M. Duggan, and T, Twomey.
Starter : Mr H. Middleton. Timekeepers : Messrs Coltman, Sinclair and A. Dalgleish. Ringmasters 1 Messrs D. Ross, Jno. Patterson and W. Miller.
Superintendent: Mr W. J. Wills. Record Secretary: Mr Menzies, Lap taker: Mr W. L. Scott. Handicapper (running and cycling) : Messrs G. Miller, Goldstone and A. Dalgleish. The date of publishing the handicaps was fixed for December 19th. In reply to Mr C. Akhurst, the Chairman said the society bad not felt justified in trying to secure the services of the Timaru Pipe Band, but as they had increased the prize money for pipe music they were sure to have larger entries. The President and Mr R. Cameron were appointed to choose the tartans for members’ rosettes. It was decided to issue distinguishing badges to all entitled to enter the ring. The president and secretary were appointed to arrange with the Waimate Brass Band to play on Boxing Day, and the president and Mr Goldstone to have the track put in order so as to allow competitors to train-. It was decided to reduce the open tug of war to five men a side.
