Temperance Reform Union.
A well-attended meeting of the Temperance Reform Union was held on Thursday evening, Mr T. Brown occupying the chair. Letters were read from Mr J. G. Woolley, thanking the Union for its reception of himself and Mrs Woolley. From Miss Roberts, suggesting a conference of workers' at Timaru. From the Rev. F. W. fsitt, re the present Licensing Act, Amendment Bill. From the N.Z, Alliance re the campaign of 1902. From the North Otago Prohibition Association re conference at Camara on October 17. Miss Roberts’ communication was referred to the Camara convention, to which Mr T. Brown (President) and Mr Geo. Dash (Secretary) were appointed delegates from the Union, other friends to attend if convenient.
A discussion took place on the items of the agenda paper for the conference, the delegates receiving information as to the attitude of the executive.
The Secretary was instructed to reply to the New Zealand Alliance agreeing to the suggested plan, and promising the assistance asked from Waimate.
The next, public meeting was fixed for October 10, the Rev. J. Blight consenting to deliver a lecture on J. B. Gough. The Secretary was instructed to write to the Rev. Hugh Kelly, from whom a visit to Waimate was anticipated,-asking him to address a No-License meeting. "’ v ,: A lengthy discussion too): place re a resolution sent from a meeting of workers addressed by Miss Roberts, ..New Zealand Alliance agent, in September, suggesting the advisability of forming a combined temperance organisation with a view to holding undenominational Band.of Hope meetings for adults and juveniles combined, this meetto taka the place of the present Wesleyan Band of Hope and Reform Union meetings, The outcome of the discussion was: “That it is undesirable to sink the meetings now being held, as juvenile interests would clash with adult demands and both might suffer; but that Mr Geo. Manchester be asked to convey to the executive of the Wesleyan. Band of Hope, a suggestion that with a view of making the work of the society more far - reaching, the Presbyterian and Primitive Methodist bodies be asked to have representation on the committee, and urge the attendance of the children of their adherents at the Band of Hope meetings.” , There were twelve members of committee present.
