Bowling.

The Waimate Bowling Club held its opening meeting on Thursday afternoon on their green. It was feared that the heavy rain of Wednesday would have made the green soft, but it was found to be in fairly good condition. The Bowling Clnb are to be congratulated on the possession of a very fine green, which, with its surroundings, is one of the prettiest spots about Waimate. The afternoon was dull and threatening, but the club members turned out i n strong force, and a closely contested and enjoyable game was the result. The number of new members present was an encouraging feature of the game. About half through the game rain began to fall, but itcoujd not affect the enthusiasm and ardour of the players, who donned overcoats and other things and finished their game. Afternoon tea was provided by the lady friends of the club in the pavilion. Tea having been disposed of, the President asked Mr Nicol to present the pair of bowls the latter had offered for competition two years ago, to Mr Hamilton. Mr Hamilton, considering tint sufficient merit did not attach itself to his win, generously handed them back to the club. A second competition waß held and Mr Inkster had proved the winner.

When Mr Hamilton was presented with the bowls on Thursday he handed ttiem over to Mr Inkster, stating that the latter was the winner in' a much better competition than the first one., Mr Inkßter/e%eßßed bis thanjos

and deprecated his own prowess, stating that it was largely owing to lack o£ zeil on;the part of other players that the bowla had fallen to him. He hoped for keener interest in the game this year. On the motion of the VicePresident a hearty vote of thanks was passed to the ladies for the good things they had provided, the bowlers declaring that were " jolly good fellows."
