A PROTEST.
TO THE EDITOR. Si«, —In your report of the Magistrate’s I Court in Waimate last week wore some cases of cattle wandering on the road. I wish to dr*w the attention of the County Council and the public to the same. The persons summoned were fined, and had costs of court to pay and £1 Is solicitor's fee in each case. In ths first ease, it is ao absurd thing to summon a man because someone left hit gate open and Ins cattle go*, on the road, if he pays- the ranger's driving fees that should be sufficient. Only persons who persistently use the roads for grosing should bo summoned, and that after they had been notified and requested to stop it. In this country no doubt there are many roads with gates across them. Inside that gate the road is practically the property of the person or persons who pat up the gate, outside you get sumunoned. Be the solicitor’s fee, lam of opinion that the County Council’s clerk should be quite competent to represent these cases that come to court. Just fancy paying a solicitor a guinea for nothing, and that in Each case ; it is practically shovelling money into his picket. Query, how long will a farmer have to work to earn a guinea ?—I am, etc., J USTTOE.
