A meeting of the Library Committee was held on Tuesday evening, there being present Meases Hamilton (chair), Milsom, Scott, Menzies, Graham, Smith, Nicol and Wills.

A letter was fecsivod from Messrs Whitcombs and Tombs with reference to the discount to be allowed on the books ordered by the Library, and this was discussed.

On the motion of Messrs Milsom and Scott it was decided to write to the councillors who had supported the motion to give the Library the usual subsidy, thanking them for their action. The committee at the same time expressed the pleasure it gave them to notice that these gentlemen recognised the Committee’s efforts to provide a suitable library for the town. It was also resolved to write to the Council regretting that they could not see their way to grant the usual subsidy. Mr Milsom suggested, that they should hold some sort of ceremony to celebrate the laying of the foundation stone Of the new building. Ha moved that a suitable corner atone should he got, and the president (Mr Hamilton), who had done a great deal for the inartitution, should lay it. Mi* Hamilton deserved to have his name placed on record in some such way, as he had been kn excellent president. M r licott seconded this.

Mr Hamilton objected to taking such a prominent position. It would be a slight 'O6 the Mayor if be were not asked to officiate on such an occasion. Messrs Graham ancl Menzies urged Mr Hamilton to taka the position, but he declined. On the motion of Mesats Graham and Nicol it was resolved to ask the Mayor to officiate, and a subcommittee •. consisting of Messrs Hamilton, Scott, Wills and Grant was appointed to arrange details. Accounts amounting to £l9 Ga 4d were passed for payment.
