INCLUSION OF WAIMATE lit) ROUGH-. Wi-LUNGTOX. Ang. 14. In the House of Representatives to-day on the motion for the introduction of the Tnnaiu Harbour Di-trict and Harbour Board Bili, Mnj if Steward said ho did not propose to oppose the Bill at this stage, but he desired to present a patiton from the May >v, Councillors and 8“6 residents of Waimate and immediate neighbourhood, praying that Waimate should not be included in the rating area of the Timaru Harbour Board. On the motion of M j jor Steward the petition was real to the House, and referred to the Locd Bills Committee.
The Hun. VV. .Hall J-.mes, who \va< in charge of ths Bill, expressed surprise at the course taken by Major Steward, who as an ex Speaker of the House, should have known better. The proper eour e was io have allowed members an opportunity to peruse the Bill, and tire proper time to hwe brought forward the petition was on the second rtadh g of the Bill. There was no in ention to force Waimate into the rating area of the Timaru Harbour Board, and the petition bristled with gros. and mis’ead. iug inaccuracies.
Major Siewa'-d defended his action in bringing up the petition at that juncture, a d s id that the allegations contained in it were made on the testimony of >he Mayor ami Councillors, and all the leading citizens of Vi aimato, and he was content' to leave the mat'er at that. The petition would ba supported by witnesses, who would appear before the Locd Bills Committee. He had no intention of „pp >sing the Bill at that stage, but he would d > hia be t later on t > persuade the House not to pass the Bill. Too Hon W. Hall-Jones remarked that if the petition was drafted on ti.e authority of the Mayor of Waimate all he cou d say that he was sorry fur the Mayor. With regard to what Major S eward h tdsaid about evidence to come before the L;cal Bills Committee, he pouted out that evidence could have b en taken without a petition being brought on.
