Police Court.

- (Before Messrs Milsom and Abwill, J’s.F.) MONDAY, !JUDY 21st. DRUNKENNESS. Two men charged with this offence pleaded guilty. They said fluey h. d work to go to, and taking %his into consideration, and the fact that they had been in the lock-up since Saturday, the Bench decide-d that they should be convicted and discharged. A first offender, charged with being drunk on the 15th inst. was convicted and ordered to pay costs, 10s. Orr v Richard—This was a case in which the sale of a bicycle was in dispute. Mr Hamilton for defendant and Mr Clement for plaintiff. Robert Clark remembered purchasing a bicycle from Benjamin McKuight on June 9th, 1900. Leifc it in Richard’s shop on 16th, but took it away again on the same day. Witness afterwards took the bicycle back to the shop on June 23rd to get the bearings screwed up. The bicycle was a Waverley. To Mr Clement : Had receipt for cheque given in payment for bicycle (produced). Richard seemed to think the bicycle was not. worth what witness bad given for it. Sidney Butcher : Was employed as a shop assistant by Mr Richard, and was in defendant’s employment in June of last year. He remembered the time when Clark got the bicycle referred. Did not remembe/ the bicycle being in the shop before that time, but knew it was there to be screwed up. Ben. McKnight was in town that day, &nd came into the shop on the 14th, when he brought some bicycles with bim, ladies’ and gents’ Waverley’s. Next morning he put them on the -stand. To Mr Clement; Did not see the ■sale from McKnight to Clarke. Believed the machines were burnt. There were no other Waveriey’s in the shop. Joseph H. Dean, manager of the Waimate Co-operative, said the company was agent for the AngloSpecial bicycle. Did not insure any of the bicycles. Received 15 per oent. commission. Was never asked to insure. This was all the evidence, and the case was adjourned to Ashburton.
