Fatal Fire in Sydney.

Sydney, July lOr A fire is raging in Messrs Anthony Hordern and Son’s immense emporium in George street. The fire has a good hold of the main building, and as a stiff wind is blowing threatens to sweep the Whole block through to Piet street. A large city gasometer is in close vicinity. The tram traffic in George street is blocked, and an immense crowd is gathering. The main building is practically gutted. The fire has spread across the rear of Parker street to the large furnishing department, which is now a mass of flames. The Brigade are slowly beating the fire back from George street. The fire was discovered shortly after 8 o’clock, luckily before many of the employees arrived. One man was killed bj jumping from a roof. The burning debris was carried a great distance, and set-fire to a house, bat was quickly subdued. Hordern’s on the Pitt street side, the direction the wind is blowing, is flanked by the park, which will prevent any further spread of the flames in that direction. The Fire Brigade got the fire in hand at 11.30, but only the walls stand.

The man killed was an employee and enquiries show that four others perished. The damage is stated to aihount to £1,000,000.
