The Pacific Cable.
Sydney, June 25
The cable steamer Britannia arrived at Norfolk Island on the 12th. Sound ings across from Brisbane disclosed generally Very suitable bottom for laying the cable. Deep soundings were taken, which gave a depth of 2£ miles.
A large range of mountains Were discovered, 1600 feet high, sixty miles long and thirty miles broad. The cable will have to go round these mountains. It is proposed to land the cable At Anson’s Bay, where the com* pany have secured lop acres of land. It is understood that Norfolk Will be the repeating station, and a large staff will he kept there. After a stay of a few days the Britannia resumes the taking of surroundings to the Bay of Islands, New Zealand.
