THE WAIMATE ADVERTISER. SATURDAY, MAY 18, 1901.

The cry in WairmJe on all sides is for water. Tanka arc dry, wells of an established reputation for inexhaustibility are lower that) tho oldest inhabitant can ever before remember them to have been, and there does not scorn the slightest prospect of sufficient rain billing to n lieVe our most pressing wants in the near future. Even tho most determined opponents of the introduction of a water supply have been forced to see the need that exists. At the present time a petition is being-taken round the town for signature, asking that some action bo taken, ami wo hope that the matter will be enthusiastically taken up, whether rain falls in the meantime or not. We will have to reconcile ourselves to the idea that we cannot do anything of ourselves from our small revenue ; we must realise that we will receive great benefits, and that for these we will have to pay a reasonable amount in the shape of extra taxation. The principal points are to adopt a scheme which' will' ensure a permanent supply for all time, and to finance it in such a way that it will press lightly upon tiiose who pay the interest on the borrowed capital. We shall return to this subject later on, and would now ask ratepayers to consider a water scheme well within the region of practical politics, and also urge that no effort should be spared to farther the project.
