A Gala Day in Timaru.
The inaugural gauiering of the Schools' Aiu.iteur Athletic Association was held nt Timaru on Thursday, on the Caledonian riocdety's grounds. There were about thirty-two schods represented, each child wearing a badge nidie.uing the school to which it belonged. Tiie train arrangements were excellent, and every flare was taken by the railway olhcials and teachers of the various schools to ensure the safety and comfort of the youngsters. The following are tiie events in which Waimate children were placed : The senior drill competition for boys was won by the Timaru Alain School, with Waimate and Waimataitai third. G. Hayes (Waimate) got first place in throwing the cricket bail, 81.jyds, 11. Taylor, also of Waimate, com-ng third with a throw of 75yds. The final heat of the 75yds race was won by Allan, J. Symon (A'aimate) getting third place, while in the 100yds race, which was won by (Jr. Crawford, D. McPiierson, of Waimate, came second. In the 120yds hurdle race the final beat was won by J. Paterson, D. McPhsrson again 'Scoring a second. The sack race, which was very amusing, was won by J. Symon (Waimate), A. H miry (Waimate) coming in a good third. McKenzie, of Waimate, got thud place in the hurdle race for boys under fourteen, which was won by J. Didgleish. The 880yds race was won by G. Hayes, and in the No. 2 sack race Symon and Hendry obtained first and second respectively. The relay race of 830yds was won by the Timaru High School, the Wtimite District High School being second, and in the dlOytls relay race Waimate again came second, The potato race was won by W. White, with J. Bird second. Girls eyents:—Tiie 50yds hoop race was won by E. Fisher, M. Dunn being second and A. Kaan (Waimate) third. J. Hamilton got second place in the final heat of the 50yds skipping race and first place in the 50yds lace. Throwing the tenuis ball was won by N. Bates with a throw of 50yds, H. Julian (Waimate) who also threw the ball 50yds, being second. In the 100yds running, under fifteen, M, Gibson ran a good second, being beaten for first place by li), Kidcjle, while in the 75yds race, under thirteen, M. Buchanan ran second, being beaten by V. Jones.' 'J. Symon and G. Walker got first and second place respectively in the bicycle race,, over fourteen, B. "Walker securing first in the 440yds bicycle race, and in the potato race, won by L.
