THE WAIMATE ADVERTISER. SATURDAY, MARCH 9, 1901.

HAVING adopted rating on unimproved values the Waimate Borough must now accept the Government valuation of properties, as provided by the “Government Valuation Act, 1896,” and the Amending Act of 1900. At thespecial meeting of the Borough Council on Monday last, it was pointed out by the Town Clerk that many of the names which appeared on the Borough valuation roll do not appear on the Government roll, and reference to the latter roll confirms this statement. The Council are taking steps to point this out to the Valuer-General, but it behoves all ratepayers to see for themselves, and if their names are not on the Government Roll, have them placed on immediately. The importance of this step is magnified by the fact that the ratepayers’ portion of the District Electors Roll is made up from the Rate Roll, which, in its, turn is compiled felT * ’W appearing on the Government Roll will not appear on the District Electors Roll in respect to ratepayers’ qualifications. It is as well, too, to give a word of warning to electors whose names appeared on the last Electors Roll under the residential qualifications only. The Regulations under the “ Municipal Corporation’s Act, 1900,” in detailing the Town Clerk’s duties with regard to the preparation of the District Electors list, reads :—“ He shall “ omit the name of every person “ enrolled in virtue of a resi- “ dential qualification, who, not “being a candidate at such an “ election, appears, from a com- “ parison of the rolls used at “any election of a Mayor or “ Councillors, not to have voted “ thereat.” Fresh application from such electors, to have their names placed in the Elector’s Roll, is therefore necessary. According to the advertisement of the Borough Council, appearing in this issue, the District Electors List is now ready, and may be inspected by all persons interested before the 12th inst. (Tuesday next), and objections made before the 17th inst. We would strongly advise every ratepayer to make a visit of. inspection and satisfy himself on the point whether or not he is on the new Electors List, and if not, rectify the omission at once.
