Waimate School Sports.
The Waimate school was favoured with perfect weather for the sports on Thursday afternoon. A large crowd of juveniles were present and also a number of adults, who eagerly watched the doings 'of their minors. Special interest was also imparted as the successful competitors will be the school’s representatives at the coming schools championship sports ac Timaru. The programme, as will be seen by reference to the various results, was a very lengthy one, and when it is stated that in some events as many as sevqn heats were run, some idea of the quickness with which they were despatched can be obtained. In fact, many athletic societies could well take a lesson from the gathering in this respect. All the masters of the school worked hard, and were well rewarded by the manner in which they succeeded in their efforts. The school is also indebted to a number of gentlemen who acted as judges, timekeepers, etc., among them being Messrs A. J. Manchester, F. Akburst, Mathias, Coltman, Baxter, Hamilton and Inkster. Several blackboard were used for the posting of results and were a great convenience to the spectators. A squad of girls, under Mr Marriott, gave - an exhibition of dumb bell exercises, going through it excellently. As there were competitions in the various sections of the sports for several ages, all competitors started off the scratch mark. In running events the best times, in proportion to age, wore put up in the 100yds race under 13 and the public school championship, won by 1). Symon and G. McKenzie respectively. The 100yds open took 12 2 ssec. G. Hayes won the 880yds, over 14. easily in 2min 25 2 Bsec.. the first 440yds taking Imin Isec., a really good performance. R. Hayes was the only other competitor to finish. In high jumping, under 11, the three placed boys cleared oft 6in. a very good jump for their size. J. Park won the open jump with 4ft 2in, afterwards clearing 4ft 6in. The bicycle races brought but poor entries, but the riding was fair. The sack and variety races created a lot of amusement. The girls gave a good exposition of the art of skipping when running, and in the hoop races also made a good show. Their competitions included flat and potato races and throwing the tennis ball.
