Sydney Railway Accident.
Sydney, March 1. The jury, witnesses ami exports visited the scone.
Mr Carrol hers pointed out whore ho saw the broken fish plate, and declared that it had been replaced. Exports examined the plate, ami swore that it had not.' Mr Carvuthers said that it was impossible to swear to the exact rail and it was a farce to ask him to locate it after repairs had been made.
Two other witnesses, who stated that they saw a broken plate just after the accident located it in different places, but complained that repairs had been made. Mr Fottler pointed out a fish plate two rails beyond .‘dr Garnithor’s spot, which an hour after the ancident had replaced a plate fractured by the engine after it was derailed. Another v.dtness deposed that ho examined the lino a few minutes after the disaster, ami confirmed Mr Eetflcr’s statement that ho saw distinct indications that tho engine went off two rail-lengths nearer Sydney. To-day’s evidence at the inquest chiefly dealt with tho condition of tho line.
The Engineer-in-Chiof of Railways said that the condition was good, but ho was sorry to have to cake the responsibility of running the class of engine like tho one derailed over the lino at the rate of GO miles an hour. The Engineor-in-Ohief’s opinion is that the chief cause of the accident was the excessive speed*
