Board of Governors.
The Board sat on Tuesday evening there being preßent:—Rev. Geo. Barclay (chairman), Rev. McKenzie Gibson, Dr. Barclay and Mes3rs Sinolair and Coltnian.
Apologieß for absence were received from Messrs Geo. Manchester and Studholme.
The headmaster reported i-hat the roll number was 41. The results of the Education Board's scholarship examination had beon received, showing that Charles Foweraker, a pupil of the school, had headed the list. Donald McPherson had passed the modical preliminary examination. With a view to encouraging athletic sports in schools a combined sports meeting is to be held at Timaru on March 28th. He had intended to hold an annual sports meeting in connection with the school and thought that this would be an opportune time for starting it. Ho suggested that for the ,jurpo3e of selecting the teams to •epresent the school at Timaru, sports je held at Victoria Park on March 2nd. A donation for prizes at the local sports was asked for. He also that the remaining £1 10s of the £ls voted fot scientific apparatus be spent for a mounting set. In order to do the scientific practical work it would be necessary to place work benches round the room used for the purpose. No further information had beeu received about the cadet corps. The chairman was empowered to arrange with the headmaster and get the furniture for the laboratory, the cost not to exceed £3. ivlr C oilman thought that the Board should contribute towards the prizes at the local school sports, which, he believed, would be a very good thing for the scholars.
Rev. McKenzie Gibson thought that as the sports were only trials for the South Cantorbury sports, no prizes were needed. The competitors would all strive to gain places in the representative teams, Mr Coltman agreed with the Rev. McKenzie Gibson.
The Chairman thought they should give £ for £ with the School Committee, who were also being approached on the subject. Mr Coltman agreed with the chairman.
Dr Barclay pointed out that they could not pass the money except for prizes for the secondary scholars. On the motion of the chairman and Mr Sinclair, it was unanimously decided that for the purpose of prizes in physical exercises for the secondary pupils in the District High School, the lioard is willing to contribute £ for £ in respect to any sum contributed for a similar purpose by the Sc'.iool Committee.
The report of the Exhibition Committee (which has been published previously) was read, showing the results of the various examinations.
A vote of thanks was p vssed to the I Exhibition Committee for i;s servioes. j The Chairman read a circular from the Education Department with j regard to the grant to district high schools. He said that from what could be gathered from the circular their school would be paid .£270 per year, which would be allocated to the. teachers by the Education Board. The circular had been discussed by the Education Board, and more information had been asked for by the Department. If the Education Department did what was apparently their intention by the circular, there would bo no need for their Board to pay the teachers at all. Th-jy would very likely havo a special meeting to consider the matter when the information from the Department arrived. Dr Barclay thought that if the Education Department paid JG27O there would be no business for the Board to do aad they would have to retire. Th-3 Rev. Bai clay said they had no connection with the Department, as they existed under a special Act of Parliament. The money now paid as salaries to the teachers by the Boird of Governors could be withdrawn at any time. Mr Gow was voted an honarium of £4 4j for hi? services at the recent exhibition exituinations.
Accounts to the amo int of <£lo 19s f d were passed for payment and the Board rose.
