A REFUTATION REFUTED.
TO THE EDITOR. Sir,— Will you kindly allow me space to reply to Mr Milsom’a repeated misrepresentations. In his letter, which appeared in your paper of the ,10th inst , referring to Mr C txter, ho says : “ All the members okdjred the Mayor to draw up and sign-an agreement with him,” At the declaration of the po)! I stated this was untrue, and I emphatically say so now. Mr Milsoin quoted a resolution that was passed at a previous mooting of tho council, held on September 26, 1900, authorising the Mayor to ascertain - on •v/hat terms Mr B istor would undertake the engineering work of the borough ; .and Mr M'dsom would like to mike tho public believe that this is the same .resolution that was carried after we .hud left the meeting of tho council iheld on October 22, 1900, when only :the following councillors were present: 'Messrs Dean, Sinclair, O’Connor and Philip and the Mayor. The resolution passed by these five (as per the council’s minute book) is ns follows : “On the motion of Councillor Dean. «• seconded by Councillor O’Connor, it “ was resolved, ‘That Mr Baxter’s 1 proposal to act as borough engineer, a‘ a salary of T 25 per annum. he “ accepted ; His Worship the Mayor !1 and Councilloi Sinclair be a com “ mittee to wait on him and have an “ agreement drawn up.’ ” This resolution Mr Milsoin, io suit his own purposes, designedly leaves out of his letter altogether. To quote Mr Milsora : “ Ratepayers will now see who is guilty of lying misrepresentation.” —I am. etc., W. CoLTMAN.
