On Saturday evening, says the Post, the contractors for the new mole made a start on pile-driving, putting in one of six.piles which are to be driven to hold up the staging for the pile driving further out, ami to support the end of the train line. A fire occuned in Customs street Auckland, on Sunday morning, causing the total destruction of Bond and Bell’s warehouse, Owen and Co.’s and L. D. Nathan’s bonded stores, all. throe being completely destroyed with their contents. Nathan’s was insured for £51.000 in the Norwich Union office and it is estimated that the loss is .£'20.000 above that amount. Owen and Go.’s insurance is £2700, and Wi e dor’s £IOOO. The other insurances are not ascertainable yet. The Bremen were quickly at work after the outbreak, but were unable to suppress the liames. There was some trouble with the water through the bursting of a main and salt water had to be used, the accident causing considerable delay. The damage is estimated at £IOO,OOO or £25,000 more than insurance.
