THE WAIMATE ADVERTISER. TUESDAY, JANUARY 15, 1901.

Tnu Borough electlon has pa° r °d ami the recalcitrant live are again, elected by a good majority. Tim question is “ What now ? ” Ot course the returned Councillors and their supporters triumphantly point to the result as a proof of the righteousness of their cause, but such is far from the case. They won by superior canvassing and by reporting the other side as desirous of raising the taxation of the Borough by “wild cat” schemes. And again, the principal figure on the other side, the Mayor, was unable to take any part, while the leader of the opposition was able to strain every nerve to secure a victory at the poll. Therefore the only proper position for tha ratepayers to take is to bring the case before the Supremo Court and finally prove the Mayor in the wrong. If they do so, the Mayor would pay the costs, and as the majority of the ratepayers evidently believe him wrong, they will be pleased to sanction such a test. If, however, he is not in the wrong, the 11 ratepayers’ looney” sullerd yet another Ira n. 'Still, it is only fair to the Mayor that he be given such an opportunity, for no one will make us believe that a vote of the ratepayers on the question, unfairly put before them, and in some instances not at all regarded, should be held to over-ride the ruling of the Chief Magistrate of the town. The returned Councillors owe it to the ratepayers fco lake this step. As they have frequently, to their own huge satisfaction, proved themselves umnistakebly in the right, the next thing we shall hear is that at the February sitting of the Supreme Court the matter will bo brought up and settled for good and all. There has been too much talk of lato, and ratepayers are desirous of seeing the foundation of it all.
