Kapua School.

The annual picnic in connection with Kapua school was held last Thursday. The day was beautiful] y fine after the previous wet one. The children, with thei^ parents, first assembled in -the school, where the special prizes aud presents were distributed. The liov. <i. Barclay, who presided, addressed the children, and especially the parents, on their xjucy of enforcing obedience. Each child was given a book and then special prizes were awarded as follows :— ~

SEWING. Sophie Hursfc (Mrs Douglas), i3e(la Fotheringhain (Mrs Allan) and Jessie Tavendale (Mca Manchester), equal ; Elsie Stevens (Mrs W. Gale), Emily Keugler (Mm, Manchester) and Ivy Bugdaie (Mrs Baaird),

MAPPING. Bella Fofcheringhara (Miss Fyfe), Arthur Beard (Miss Fyfe) and James Stevens (Mr A. kernes).

WRITING. Jessie Tavendale (Mrs Dugdale) ; neafcest exercise, Alice Dugdaie (Mrs Hurst). ABITHMETIO.

E. Hurst (Misa Fyfe). GABDENS. Mary Tavendale and Willie Tavendale (Miss Fyfe). Miss Susie Hurst was given a handsome lady's companion for assisting at the concert.

ATTENDJLNOE. Attendance certificates were awarded to Annio Stevens, Alice Dugdale, T. Keugler, Jessie Tavendale, E. Eeugler and E. Stevens. Great interest was taken in the Spelling Bee, conducted by Mrs Barnett. Miss Bella Fotheringham eventually carried off the prize in the senior division, and E. Keugler and G. Lawlor equal in the junior. Messrs \V. and J. Gale aent the prizes. Mr Barclay then in the name of the scholars, presented Miss Pyfe, the teacher, with a handsome pair of vases, as a mark of the eateena in which she was held. Mr Barnett, on behalf of Miss Fyfe, thanked the children with a few kind words. Mr Hayman, being an ex-teacher, addressed the children briefly. Mr .Dugdale, the ohairman, announced that the school would be closed for six weeks. He called for a show of hands as to where the picnic would be hejd. The Waihao River being decided on, all drove oft and enjoyed themselves immensely, winding up the day's amusement with asocial evening -in the school*
