A Letter from South Africa.
Mr J. M. Gilchrist of Waimate Las .received a letter from his brother, Mr W. W. GHlchrist, who is at present in South Africa from which we have been permitted to make the following extracts :—: — Since leaving Waimate eighteen years ago, I have had some rough times. Finding myself in Sydney, I enlisted in the Australian Bushmen, being a drilled man was promoted to be Trooper Sergeant Major of Brabanta Horse. Tha wages are £1 a day and out, of that I have to keep my" horse and myself. , I have been in seven engagements since last inarch, and have got through alright bo far. As you know I am 52 years of ago but I passed for ' 39. I have, this dfiy 'volunteered for service in China, and if accepted will get the rank of Captain and j£lo a week. I hope this will find you all well and I send my best wishes. s
