THE CIRCUMSTANCES OF THE CASE.
No more information can be obtained from the Police, but it is understood that further circunistancQS which led up to the arrest of Styche hare come to light. Dr, Clayton received an unsigned typewritten letter asking him if, for a consideration of £200, he was propared to put a certain lady out of the way, and, if ne was agreeable to the proposal, he was to reply by means of an advertisement. Dr Clayton immediately took the letter to the Inspector of Police, and they inserted the advertisement agreed on in the Press of June 16. Subsequently, the doctor received other letters, evidently from the same source, and, finally, a postoard was sent, oornplaining of the delay in carrying out the arrangement. Shortly after the advertisement appeared in the newspaper, a lady, similar to the one described in the letters, presentsd herself to Dr Clayton, for treatment for biliousness, and he continued to treat hor foe some time. The detectives. -,vho had been watching the case closely, apparently saw fit to connect the letters with the accused. On Saturday he informed his fellow employees that the office typewriter had been damaged to such an extent as to render it use- : less, and he went out and bought, a machine to replace it. However, during the same afternoon the Police obtained access to the 'typewriter in Mr Pihocles's office, upon which it was supposed the letters had been written, and, taking with them an expert, obtained evidence to show that the letters might have been written on that machine, as there were certain peculiarities in ! tha type. The machine is one of | the few old No. 3 Remingtons in Christchucch, and; although badly wrecked, the expert was very soon able to put it in a sufficiently workable condition to enable comparisons of its work to be made. Subsequently a warrant for tbo arrest of Styche was obtained under the hand of Mr Beetham, and daring the ovening it was acted upon and he was taken to tho Police Starion. — Lyttelton Times.
