The Mayor has received the following letter fro in thy Timaru Ha i hour Board, and has authoiised ita publication for the geneial information, of the ratepayers. The Borough Council uieoie on the night previous to Che Harbour Board meeting, and this will give the burghers little time for discussing the eubjeet. - If the rotppayeis appear to wish it held, His Wot ship will p- obably call a public meeting first, or an early special one of the Council.

"Timaru, 26th July, 1900. " Sin, — I have the honour by direction of the Tiniaru Harbour Board to inform you that the Board considers that the Borough of Waimate should ba include 1 in the Timaru Harbour district, and that the matter will be discussed at the next ordinary meeting of the Board to be held on Tuesday, 28th August, at 11 a.m. ' I have also been directed to inform yon that tha Board will be glad to meet a deputation from your Council, to discuds the whole question. " I may be allowed to roint out that it is essential to tne continued prosperity of the district that the largest steamers in the Homo tiade should be able to call at this port at any time, and with the utmost safety, in order that importers and expoi ters may have the advantage of the most favour- j able rates of freight. With this object the Board are extending the harbour, so as to provide accommodation for v«ssels drawing up to 26 or 27 feet. Our trade ia increasing rapidly, our ordinaryrevenue from wharfage and ships' dues increased by 50 per cent, last year, and the first half of this year's shows a substantial increase on the same period for last year. The Board have been able to reduce the general Harbo«r Hates this ytar by £1500. The present rate is equal to a ft action under, Jd in the £. The harbour dues at this port are already ooi si Ur ably lessstliHu i^s i'm^-s . .Oiuiedin, and, as tnJU _•<< iswe,., it wi.l become practicable to reduce both the harbour rates and dues still further. It will become more and more apparent that this is the only port that Waimate, as well as Timaru, have, in the futuie, to depend on. The quantity of frozen meat shipped from Oamaru last year was 20,291 carc;S9s; from §Ti mar u 297,079 carcases, and for the first six months of this year, from Timaru, 259,035 carcases ; other trade in proportion. The Chairman will be glad to know if it will be convenient for a deputation from your Council to meet this Board on 28th August. I am, — Your obedient servant, W. J. Tbnnawt, , Secretary.
