THE- HEATHEN CHINEE.
A correspondent of the Tuapefca Times says : — A party of miners, in working their claim, washed away a small piece qi a Chinaman's garden. John wanted compensation. They agreed to give him 15s. No, 1 of the party paid John the 15s, but No. l's mates were not aware of it. John mot No. 2 in the street and asked for the money. No. 2, laughingly, offered John 2s 6d, he "no savvy." He then offered 5s — " no savvy." Offered 7s 6d, still "no savvy." Then No. 2 offered 10s ; John thought better and took it. No. 2 intended to go as high aa ths 15s if John had stuck out. Then John went for No. 3 — there being three mates in the claim. The ; last threatened to give John in charge ; [ John got frightened and cleared. In the meantime No. 2 intended to tell his two mates that he had settled with 1 tho Chinaman for 10a. When he got i homo, there was a note from No. 3 | stating that he had squared the China ! man. The only thing that No.'s 1 and ' 2 are sorry for is that John did not get money from thar No. 3 mats. They take it in good part and laugh at it. But the small bo3 r3r 3 chaff them unmercifully about it. One youngster said to one of them, " Oh ! Mr D , 1 did not think that an liishoaan was so soft *nd simple as to be taken in and sold by a heathen Chinee."
