Lieufc.-A-djiUant Lewin, of the Rough Eiders, in a letter dated April 10th, writing on the train between East London and Burghersdorp, states that whilst at East London Trooper Franks was washed off his horse^ whilst exercising in th© saa. Lieut. Walker and Seigeaut O'Parrell went to his rescue and weie nearly drowned. Ohclmoadalay behaved splendidly and got O'l?aATeil ashore, and then went on for Walker, "and just saved him. fie had to be resuscitated but he ie aU light now. Trooper Y/orsely, of the Rough Riders, writing to his sister at Fendalton, says that at East London some voluuteers from England asked several of the Rough Riders where "they catne 'from, and -when -informed gave three cheers, and then asked, " Where is New Zealand ?" About thirty of the Contingent were left behind at East London in the hospital.
