IS IT TRUE ?
Weird stories are in circulation regarding the conduct of a trooper belonging to the first contingent,. who hails from a county near Dunedin. It is said that the trooper in question is a very self-willed individual, and was brought up in Ofcago with several of the non-coms, who are now in the first contingent. On the voyage to the Cape, the trooper played up and was put in irona for insubordination ; in camp, in South Africa, the same thing occurred. The fiaal act of the dramatic story is alleged to have included the arrest of the trooper, the court-martial, and the order for the trooper V> be shot. This was followed by Major Eobin pleading for the youth, and his incarceration in prison cells being commuted to seven years. The final scene in the drama "is stated to have been remission of penalty, discharge from the army, and sent back home to New Zealand in disgrace. The feelings of his parents, who did not wish the young man to go away, can be better imagined than described. — Exchange.
