' High School Board.

The usual meeting of the above was held on Tuesday evening 'when Revc. Geo. Barclay (chair) and McKenzie Gibson, Dr. Barclay, and Messrs * Ooltraan, G. Manchester, and Sinclair were present. Mr Pitcaithly, headmaster, and Mr Graham, 'secretary, were also in attendance. An apology for absence was received from Mr Howell. The minutes of last meeting were read and confirmed. This boing the annual meeting the election of a chairman was nocesstvy. In vacating the chair the Rev. Barclay said that nothing very startling had occurred during the year. The Board had obtained some very good tables during the year, thoso showing the income of the Board would be useful for all Lime. Tn conjunction with Mr Pitcaithly he had picked out a number of scientific instruments as the Board had authorised. No friction had occurred during the year, and he thanked the Board for their courtesy during -that period. Mr Graham then took the chair during the election of a chairman* On the motion of Me Sinclair and Rev. McKenzie Gibson, the RevG. Barclay was re-elected chairman. The rev. gentleman^ in thanking the Board for re-election said thafe it was his opinion that the chairmanship should go round the table and not be monopolised by any one ■member. .Mr Coltman moved a very heartyvote of thanks to the chairman foe his excellent work during the year and this was warmly seconded by Mr Manchester. Correspondence was read from i — A. McLennan, one of the Board's tenants, asking for a copy of his lease. Mr Pitcaifchly, reporting on the working of the school during the past two months. The roll number was 42, an increase of five on the past two months. Many 01, the pupils were preparing for examinations, some for the civil service examinations, some for matriculation, and some for the junior university scholarship, - There were 60 pupils available for the cadet corps and he had written for the acceptance of the corps by the Government. Members expressed their grati» fixation at the high scale of teaching obtained in the school. The standard of teaching would compare with any high school, while the cost to the pupils was comparatively trifling. Mr Pitcaithly explained the lengths to which teaching goes in different subjects. They far exceeded the syllabus and in several subjects were doing work specified for the B.A. degree. The chairman referred to the revised syllabus now under- consideration by the Education board, providing for advanced instruction in the higher classes. In reply to a question, the Rev. Gibson informed the meeting thafe the school committee intend taking action when the Government have accepted the cadet corps. From John Anderson, asking for a reduction of rent. He had effected the insurance on the building as required. — Declined. From MM 1 * Gow and from Mr Scott thanking ,tbe board for the donations of £4 '"4s and £5 |5s re* speotively. * f Mr Coltman "moved a vote of thanks to the secretary, Mr Graham, for his extra wock during tke year. This was seconded by the Rev. McKenzie Gibson. Accounts amounting to £33 Os 6<s were passed, and the board rose.
