THIRD CONTINGENT.
CnßisTcnnßcii,'Peb. 15. The Union Company are providing steamers capablo of carrying 7000 people, on the occasion of the send-olf to the contingent on Saturday. The men of the third contingent were reviewed by the Lord Ranfurly in Hagley Park this moning. aud theie was a very large atendance of the public. The various movements of the men were marked throughout with much precision, and generally the affair was a great success. Admiration was expressed on all sides at the physique and steadiness of the men and the excellence of the horses. The Premier, and the Hons. McKenzie and Walker were present during part of the proceedings. This afternoon the men were entertained at luncheon by the Mayor, Mr W. Recce, at which the Governor and Ministers wore present.
Later. The contingent paraded mounted at the camp at 9.45 this morning in order to proceed to Hagley Park to be reviewed by the Governor. As the local men were still receiving their equipments there was a comparatively small turn out of the Canterbury troop, but the northern men mustered in full force. f Major Jowscy, the officer commanding the contingent, was in charge, and the parade state was as follcws : — Canterbury troop, Captain Rose in command, first division (Lieut. Tucker) 26, second division (Lieut. Bradburne) 26, advance and rear guards G, total 58 ; No. 2 company, Wanganui troop (Lieut. Bourn, of the Canterbury troop) 34 ; Hawke's Bay troop (Lieut. Fitzhert), 40 1 total, 74; grand total, exclusive of officers, 182. Colonel Penton, the Premier, the Hons. J, McKeczie and W, C. Walker were on the ground. The Governor, accompanied by the Mayor, arrived at 11 o'clock* Tae various evolutions by the contingent were performed fery satisfaeieriltf.
The Major of Christchurch entertained the officers and men of che contingent fit lunch at the Opera House this afternoon. The Governor, the Premier, the Bon Messrs McKonand Walker, Mr Justice Denniston. Bi&hop Julius, the Rev. Dr Movloy, the officers of the Taumiga and the, Bingt'ove, seveinl members of Parliament, and visiting mayors were amoi q the guests. Mr Eeeee, Mayor of Chiistclmrch, hir\ advised the military tvnthouties that " the troops will leave th^ park at twenty minutes past eleven o'clock on Saturday. If the Timaru train ar rives at Addington at five minutes to 11 o'clock there will be ample rime foi the Tunaiu volunteers to reach tlv\ Paik." The Mayor of Timaru receive the following from Mr 0. Louisson cluirtnau of tho Christchurch commit tee :—": — " Understand that the Defence authorities have gi anted permissioi for Volunteers from country districtsto attend the send-o.T at Christchurch. My committee will be delighted to see them take part in the ceremony." We are indebted to the courtesy of Lieut. Raymond, of the Port Guards, for copies of the above. The Premier this morning decided that Lieutenant Lewin, of the 15 Bat | tery, should go wfth the Canterbury contingent as one of the four special officers allowed by the Imperial Government. Lieutenant Lewin will retain the same rank that he held in the Volunteers. The Lyttplfcon committee will entertain the contingent at lunch, at which tho Governor will be present, and there will be an extensive marine demonstration.
