St. Augustine's Church.
The annual parish meeting was held in the schoolroom on Tuesday evening, there being a fair attendance. The vicar presided, and said he was glad to be abla to again congratulate the parishioners upon the result of the year's finances. There had been an extraordinary expenditure of nearly £150, but this, together with ordinary expenditure, had been met out of the year's revenue, and the balance sheet still showed a small credit. This satisfactory result was due to an increase in the offertories and subscriptions, the offertories alone having increased over £30. When they remembered that the offertories for 1896 and 1897 were considerably in, excess of previous years,, there was every cause for congratulation. The vicar said he was glad both the outlying districts of Hunter and Makikihf had contributed their share to this desirrable result. He gladly recognised in connection with these districts the earnest and faithful labours of Mr C. C. Oldham, who, for over nine months, had worked as lay assistant. Those to whom Mr Oldham more immediately ministered spoke in the highest terms of his work. One and all greatly regretted his departure, which was a distinct loss to the parish. The chairman made reference to the enlargement of the organ, and congratulated the vestry on bringing to so successful an issue, a work that entailed so much thought and anxiety. The Sunday School Building Fund also showed a credit of £13. Church officers were elected as follows r — Vicar's warden, Mr W. H. Beckett; people's waiden, Mr Fred. Akhurst ; vestrymen, Messrs E. C. Studholme, D. Watts, J. W. Freeman, S. Bird, M. Innes* Jones, F. Eoberts, Geo. Akhurst, J. H. Dean, and C. Chohuondeley. Mi* W. H. Beckett was declared synodsman for the parish. Messrs A. M. Taaffe and A. Jones were appointed auditors. After the usual votes of thanks, the meeting terminated.
