Organ Recital.

Th« organ recital at St. Augustine'i Church on Tuesday eveninp was * pronounced success in every way. There was a large congregation in spite of several counter atti actions, the church being quite full. Mr Wells' playing was a treat to Jisten to and must havt given satisfaction to all those who were

prestnt, while the programme of music f alccted for the occasion was well adapted to bring out both the power and range of the organ as reconstructed. During the evening the Ber. Mc&enzie Gibson rendered with fine «ffect th« solos " Thou wilt not leave," and "If with all your hearts." The Bey. C. Coates, formerly Incumbent at Waimate, was present and gavo an address on the place of instrum«ntal music in leligious worship. It was owing to the efforts of Mr Coates that

the first pipe organ was obtained for St< Augustine's Church gome years ago and he congratulated th« congregation on the forward step they had made in improving the instrument and placing it in a better position where it would be seen and heard to much better advantage, Mr G. M. Sandford, of Christchurch, has just completed the re-construction and enlargement of the organ. The old action hai been discarded, and replaced by a new and

enlarged one, which, with the exception o f four lows of pipes, has resulted m quite a new instrument. The new woik comprises a new swell sound board df three ptops ;s; s two new stops of pipes, one of 6ft pitch and on a of 4ft, called Hohl flutr and flute ; new b?lJows, with usual wei^htt and counter balances ; a complete pedal prgan and pipes of 16ft tone, with action to the mesent pedal board; a swell-box with the Usual shutters and footlever ; also a coupler to couple ths manuals to the. pedals. The oicjan has ftee.i erected on a platform over the V3slry-roor>i, in the north-east transept of the church, and placed there lends a new glace and dignity to the building. At the collection, which wa>4 in a,id of the organ building fund, the imoi.nS contributed was £24 12s 3d.
