Waimate Borough Council.

The annual meeting of the abore was held on Wednesday last; present— -His Worship the Mayor (Mr X* Nicety,' th» Mayor-elect (Dr Barclay), and Councillors Collett, Petit, Jones, O'Connor, Inkster, Mann, and Coltman. The minutes of last annual meeting were read and confirmed. Mr Nicol, on retiring from the chair, thanked the Councillors for the courtesy and co-operation extended to him during his term of office, and said he felt sure'his successor would ably fill the post. He had much pleasure in asking Dr Barclay to take the chair. The Mayor-elect then signed the declaration, and said he hoped he would do ' as well as his predecessor. He thanked ' the ratepayers for electing him, and although it was the first public office of any importance he had held, he would do , his best to' justify the confidence reposed ia him. | Councillor Coltman congratulated Dr .Barclay upon being elected Mayor of - Waimate, and spoke of the good work hi the interests of the borough, which was done by the late Mayor, He thought it a pity the borough should lose Mr Nicols services, and he hoped some day to a<mm. ace him at the Council's table. The ordinary business was then taken, Correspondence was read as follows :—: — From the Inspector of Nuisances, reporting the sanitary state of tho borough to be satisfactory. From J. O'Leary, offering to supply water free of charge, if the Council would erect a drinking trough in front of his premises. The request was agreed to, the work to be carried out under th« same conditions a3 the trough was erected at the mill. From D. Smith, complaing of cattle on street, — Keferred to inspector. From J, Srqith, Copeland's Paddock, protesting against nightsoil being deposited near his place.— His Worship the Mayor and Councillor Petit were appointed to inspect the nuisance, with power to aot. From Hon, Major Steward, stating that the Government had agreed to erect cattle and sheep loading yards at Waimate station, and also thanking the Council for the resolution regarding his services which was passed at last meeting of the Council. A discussion took place as to the advisability of appointing » caretaker to Victoria Park, and T. M'Connell was appointed at a salary of £1 16s per year. It was decided to close the Council's office from the 26th Dec. to 4th Jan. Proposed by Councillor Miinn, seconded by Councillor Petit, and carried, " That a committee be appointed, consisting of His Worship the Mayor and Councillors Coltman, Inkster, and the mover and seconder, to possess themselves of all information obtainable re rating on unimproved values, and report within two months as to the desirability or otherwise of recommending pucfr to the ratepayers." It was resolved to asphalt the whole •width of the foothpath now kerbed in Shearman street, The balance sheets for the half year •nding 31st March, 1898, duly audited, was read and adopted. Mr Nicol asked the Council to give their opinion as to whether he should retain his seat on the South Canterbury Charitable Aid Board, and it was the opinion of the Council that he should. A resolution was passed accepting surrender of Waimate County Saleyards Company 1 * lease, and granting a fresh lease for the remainder of the term qf the ■fresh lease from the Ist Feb. next. Accounts amounting to £125 9s 4d were passed. The Council then sat as a DOMAIN BOAKD, The minute 3 were read and oonfirmed. The clerk reported that the rent of one or two tenants was getting in arrears, and he Wft9 instructed to inform them that if the rent was not paid up the usual penalty of foreclosure would be inflicted. Accounts amounting to .£6 4s 4d were passed, aad the meeting ended.
