THE WAIMATE ADVERTISER.

* SATURDAY, OCT. 29, 1898.

Following the example of a few of th« larger municipalities and perhaps stirred -up by some of the energetic in the town, the Wainiate Borough Council has determined on a forward movement. At. last Monday night's meeting it waa <decided to moye y in the matter of a salejard for Wahnate and to ascertain the yaluation^of the Borough, to ienable the "ratepayers \o iorm an opinion i&B to the . desirability' or < otherwise of adopting rating on uaimproved value.. ■ I'or- some time "past ! we have advocated this important < rating -reform, and we ' further direct .our readers' attention to a JDote.pn the' subject by our contributor " Eruera." ,'The erection of public sale- . jards has been pressed on ,the attention .of ,the v Waimate public before, by our townsman, ,Mr J. B. Clement, who some -years .ago endeavoured to wake the Council and burgesses to - their duty in '• this and ! other things ,by. calling a public ' meeting to 'discuss matters. Mr Clement was alieacL of the times, but it is '\ .more probable that 'he was" ahead of the people. Jn any 'case, there #an be no * question but that the ' erection of public ."saleyards will go ,a long, waj to make ' "Wainiate the inariet 4owh of .a large and „4c losely, s ettled district.,; .Supposing "the saleyards -cost 16260,j this ,sum , is a mere ""bagatelle' ,to a borough'ihat has no over- ■ draft, and>iequires to'hunt"about for ways - in",which spend 1 a' 'shilling rate.' eince its inception to do anything worth calling progressive,? and every encouragement should be given it to carry these proposals, and to go further still towards making the hest of the town's possibilities. ,

The question of a public weighbridge for •the town was placed before the Borough Council last Monday, but members did aaot see the good it would do. But this cannot be taken aa a dismissal of the subject. The man who made, the application probably understands, the necessity for a weighbridge -more fully than -tha members, of the Council. At present the buyers of. bulky .commodities, such *s coal, potatoes, grain, etc., have to take the weight on trust. Everyone iB looking forward to a large influx ,6f trade in the near future. Some people will, of course, oppose the erection, on the ground of being ahead of the times, but it is better to be in advance than to lag behind. T,he, matter is well worth considering at Monday night's meeting, and persons interested should come prepared to supplj information which will put the v matter more clearly before the public.
