THE WATER SUPPLY.
A public meeting was held on Monday night in the Borough Council Chambers, to consider the question of a water supply. About 25 ratepayers were present. His Worship the Mayor presided, and in the course of a long speech pointed out the necessity of a water supply for Waimate. A good deal of - information on the subject had been obtained, but before going to further expense it was thought advisable to get an expiession of •opinion from the ratepayeis. Three ichemes irom two different engineers would be laid before them, and any resolution they might pass would be taken as a recommendation to the Council. Mr Baiter then read the three schemes ; (1) Mr Sandison's, to bring the water from spring near Rogers' for fire prevention purposes only ; cost £7000, necessitating a rate of Is 4d. (2) Mr Dobsons, No. 2 scheme, to biing water from Kelcy's Bush, to cost £9000, the rate being Is 9d. This would not give a supply for motive power. (3) Mr Dobsons, JS T o. 3 scheme (from Kelcy's), cost £11,700, giving a rate of 2s 2d. This would give a supply for motive power.
A great deal of discussion took place, many of those present seeming indifferent one way or the other, and ultimately Mr J. Hunt proposed, and Mr Manchester seconded, " Tkat the schemes as read be dropped." Mr Graham moved as an amendment, " That the matter be put before the ratepayers." The amendment was lost by 10 to 9, and the motion was carried by 11 to 10-
Mr Hunt favoured the sinking of a well, and the erection of a windmill near the Council Chambeis. He signified his willingness to withdraw his motion and this was agi-eed to. Mr Giaham moved and ' Mr Akhurst seconded, " That, in the opinion of ihismaeting, it is desirable that one of the thiee schemes be adopted, and that the Council decide which shall be put to the ratepayers to accept or reject." — Carried unanimously. A vote of thanks to the chair ended the meeting.
