STAFFORD-STREET SPORTS.

These Bports wero resumed to-day, and were a great success. At noon a large assemblage had gathered, which kept on increasing as the afternoon progressed.

The sports commenced with the Scotch game of Tossing the Caber, a beam eighteen feet in length, and for this the following competed : — T. Ryan, J. Woolnough, E. Alexander, J. Stewart, J. Evans, W. Evans, Ross and M'Gurk. After several trials had been made, Ryan threw the caber about 30ft. W. Evans threw it within 4 inches of Ryan's cast, and Ross and Stewart within 12 inches ; the other competitors had no chance. Ryan accordingly carried off the first prize, £3 ; aud W. Evans the second, £2. v

The principal event of the day was the wrestling, which took place in the Dublin style, and for which the following entered : — J. White, T. Carter, — Muriagh, M. Gillon, M. O'Rourke, J. Brennan, J. Shortall, J. Williams, S. Brennan, who were matched as follows : — Gillon and White, Carter and" O'Rourke, Murtagh and Shortall, Williams and Brennan. Whelan stood out for the final standard. After a severe struggle, Gillon, O'Rourke, Shoriall and Brennan succeeded in disposing of their opponents, and the second standard was disposed as follows ; — Whelan and O'Rourke, Shortall and Gillon. The struggle between Whelan and O'Rourke lasted upwards of an hour, and then they had to stop in order that the wrestlers might take a little rest. Shortall and Gillon then commenced, and after a time, Shortall succeeded in throwing his opponent. O'Rourke and Whelan once more tackled to, and finally Whelan was thrown, and O'Rourke thus became the victor. At the request of the competitors, the prizes were altered, from the prizes of £20' and £3 to four prizes of £10, £7, £4 and £2, which were awarded as follows : — First prize, O'Rourke ; second, Whelan; third, Shortall; fourth, Gillon. Honorable mention was also made of the defoated competitors.

At six p.m. a tool race for boys under 15 years of age camo off, for which J. Brieu, F . Fitzsimmons, L. H. Cohen, started. After a smart spin, Cohen gained tho first prize, £2 ; aud Fitzimmons the second, £1.

To-day the sports will commence with tilting at the ring, wrestling in the Cumberland and Westmoreland style will commence as soou as the tilting is over. &
