The Melbourne "Argus" of tho 23rd ult, reports of the week : —
Quite an average extent of business lias been transacted in the import markets to-day. Attention, however, has been more especially directed to one or two staple articles. Breadstuffs have been more largely dealt in than for some time past. We loam that nearly 1000 tons Victorian country flour have changed hands at Ll3, besides 100 tons Adelaide at Ll3 10s, iv bond. A lino of about 30 tons Tasmrvnian, to arrive by a steamer just due, was sold at Lll 10s, in bond. Some 20,000 bushels Tiisuianian wheat have been sold at os f. o. b. at Launceston. Trade sales of Victorian flour arc reported at Ll3 10s, and of wheat at 5s 3d to 5s 6d, according to sample. The towu millers purpose advancing the price of flour to Ll4. Wo understand that the Flcuhero has been chartered huro to load home with bieadstuffs. from Adelaide, at a freight of about 60s per ton. At auction to-day tho cargo of 51G5 bags of Mauritius sugar, ex ( Cleorpatra, was oQ'crcd, but only 2145 bugs I were disposed of at prices fully sustaining ! previous quotations. The Cossiporc sugar, ex St Bernard was withdrawn. In teas we have only to refer to tho sale of a line of old medium cpngous, in chests, afc Is sd. Malt inclines upwards ; a parcel of 2000 bushels prime pale in tanks wns placed at 10s" 6.1. Castor oil on the spot continues exceedingly, scarce, and for 100 cases purchased to-day as much as 6s had to be paid ; for a shipment of 50U cases to arrive per Santon, close ou 5s 6d I was realised. Currants are moving off freely at 4d. A ten ton lot of Patua rice fouud a buyer at L3O. Iv tobacco, stiles come before us of Starlight (ens al a figure approaching Is 3d, and of Buchanan's tens ab Is Id. By public sale, damaged tens brought 6id to Is Id net cash. Bulk alo is regarded with marked favor. Some 250 hhds Buss's No. 4 have been quilted at equal to L 8 6s for trade parcels, aud importers are now determined to establish \ advanced rales. Stocks of Joulcs's aro so much reduced that slightly improved prices have been already secured.
