A BLACK FUTURE FOR WESTLAND.
■' ' ♦ TO THB EDITOR OF THE W£ST COAST TIIIES. Sir — The miners oi* this district are in a great state of excitt-nient from the rumors which Lave reached us of late, concerning the appointment of Mr Sale as our future king. We have seen enough of his official acts during the last three years, tr> know that under his rule we have little to expect from his governmenb but a continuation of tho thoroughly rotten system of which we have so long complained. When Mr Hall defended us against Mr Moorhouse in tho Assembly in Wellington, avo all thought that the old style of things would be entirely swept awaj r , but as far as I can see we have simply jumped out of the frying-pan into the fire. Is iL too late to avert the threatened evil ? In the event of our sending a Goldfields member to Wellington at a future session, ■would it not be possible to move for the repeal of the Westland County Act, and to introduce another to make this downtrodden district into a new Province ? I hear all sorts of proposals made, some of which are of course entirely out of the question, such as making a physical force demonstration, or as I heard one man express himself " Muster all hands ; and see it out at once." We see by your articles of late, that your sympathies arc with us on this question, and we anxiously await your advice. For my own part I am perfectly willing to put down my pound towards a pension for Mr Sale, on the sole condition of his leaving us alone, and taking up his permanent residence in Christchurch. lam not fond of rushing into print, but the urgency of the case must be my excuse. I am, &c, Bltte Shist. Waimea, November 9.
