MUNICIPAL COUNCIL.

c A special Meeting of the Municipal Council was held yesterday afternoon, to consider the propriety of adopting temporary means to check the encroachments of the sea on the North beach. Present : His Worship the Mayor ; Councillors Button, Bartletr, Higgin, Mcßeih, Ecclesfiekl, Patsrson, Boyle, and Prosser. The Mayor having briefly stated the object of the meeting, requested the Town Surveyor to state what suggestions lie had to make respecting the work in question. The Town Surveyor said that instead of brushwood he intended to put dowu saplings, of at least six inches each in diameter. Jfcl c had spoken to Mr Eochfort respecting this, and that gentleman approved of the plan. The cost would be about LlB per chain. In reply to Cr. Boyle the Town Surveyor stated that he believed Mr Eochfort intended to put dowu a chain and a-half from the groin. Cr. Button moved that the work be proceeded with at . once, and that a subcommittee be appointed to confer with the Town Surveyor thereon Sucli committee to consist of his Worship the Ma3 r or, Crs Prosser, Button, and Paterson — the cost not to exceed L2OO. Cr. Higgin seconded the motion, which was passed unanimously. The following resolution was then passed on the recommendation of tho Public Works Committee :—": — " That the sub-committee previously appointed do form a deputation to wait m the Hon. John Hall, and the Goldfields Secretary, with the view of ascertaining what the Government intended to do with regard to the permanent beach protection. The Council then adjourned.
