DESULTORY BOYD.
♦ TO THE EDITOE OF THE WEST COAST TIMES. Sie — The present Municipal year bids fair to be a stormy one. Already has one of our newly-fledged Councillors flown into print ; and what for ? Except it be for the purpose of trying his pinions it is difficult to conjecture. I trust that Councillor Boyd will for the future content himself by flapping his wings in the Council Chamber, for he certainly cannot support himself in the atmosphere of a newspaper. What means his virtuous indig- • nation in to-night's letter? _He repudiates the charge of having initiated a desultory conversation ! Surely he must imagine that there is some subtle connection between the words " desultory" and " insulting." If this be his idea, let him consult Walker, and he will find that there is nothing derogatory to his dignity, or damaging to his reputation as a Councillor, in representing him as having initiated a " desultory" conversation. _ It flavors very much of popularityseeking when a Councillor rushes into print as the champion of the rights of the ratepayers. Councillor Boyd's sympathies seem to be with those who set the authority of the Council at defiance by not paying their rates. The expression of such sympathies is not a bad move for a candidate, but it ill becomes a Councillor. There has been already too much indecision in the matter of enforcing the payment of the second moiety of the rates'; The Council should now take a firm stand/ and without being harsh or hasty, make the ratepayers " stump up" what they owe to the Corporation. Yours, &c, Citizen. October 24, 1867.
