RESIDENT MAGISTEATE'S COURT.

(Before Q-. G-. FitzGerald, Esq., E.M.) Fridat, August 23.

Mr Warden Schaw, J.P., took his seat upon the Bench with the Resident Magistrate.

The applications made by John Moleay, (Waimea) ; Campbell and Mclburn, (Hokitika) ; Joseph Beale, (Waimea) ; Neil M'Kinnon, (Hau Hau) ; Henry Lee Robinson, (Kanieri) ; Duncan Langston, (Piper's Flat) ; for slaughtering licenses were granted. Similar applications by Henry Diedrick, (Ross) ; Ward and Gordon, (Hokitika), were refused. The hearing of the application made by — . Hosie, (Kanieri), was adadjourned till Friday, the 30th instant, in order to enable the Inspector of Slaughter-houses to report upon the 3*arcl.

Breach op Police Ordinance — An information laid by the Secretary of the Hokitika and Greymouth Tramway against John Thompson for destruction of property belonging to the Tramway Company was adjourned till Monday, the 23th August. Assault. — Mary Hannah Selfc was charged with assaulting Elizabeth Hankin>on, by biting her on the cheek. It appeared that the ladies had some dispute. The one having, as it was stated, " called the other names." The defendant admitted having bitten the complainant, but she had done so after the complainant had assaulted her. His Worship fined the defendant 5s and costs.

Obstructing the Thoroughfare. — The information laid by the police against William Eussel, for obstructing the public thoroughfare by building thereon, was withdrawn.

Bkeacit op the Westland Pcjblic Ordiance. — William Eellar was charged with failing to keep a light burning over his hotel, the Cafe National Hotel. As a ch.vge of that nature had on a former occasion boon brought against tbe defendant, his worship fined him 10s with costs. A similar charge was made against Ann Conway, of the Charley Napier Hotel, but as this was the first offence, his Worship dismissed the case. Bkeacii op Dog Nuisance Ordinance. — Frederick Baker, was fined Ll and costs, for having in his possession an unregistered dog above the age of throe months.

Brfach of Police Ordinance. — Joseph Anderson was fined Ll and costs, for neglecting to keep the chimney of liis house clean.

CIVIL CASES. Walters v. Mendoza. — Adjourned till the 24th instant.

The Court was then adjourned till eleven o'clock next day.

A FAit in Mitres. — One of the wooden mitres, carved by Grinding Gibbons over a prebend's stall in the cathedral church of Canterbury, happening to become loose, Jesse White, the surveyor of the edifice, enquired of tho Dean whether he should make it fast — " for, perhaps," said Jesse, " it may fall on your reverence's head.'. — " Well, Jesse," said the humorous Cantab, " suppose it does fall on my head, I don't kno y that a mitre falling on my head would hurt it."
