Tho Hokitika Debating Society held their usual meeting last night, in the Fire Brigade Hall. The adjourned debate of " whether the lands in Westland should be sold," was resumed. We aro prevented in this issue furnishing tho epitome of this discussion, that we promised a week ago. As an exponent of the public mind on this important subject, and, evidence of tho existence of deliberative talent outside our councils, wo intend taking the earliest opportunity of fulfilling our engagement. We believe the subject for next evening is "Scottish song and poetry, with illustrations." We would remind our readers that Mr St. George White exhibits his phantasmagoria this evening, of which tho most interesting portion, no doubt, will be the colored photographic views of the Maungatapu tragedy. The narrative he delivers, has, we understand, been carefully arranged, and brings to light many incidents connected with the niurders not known to the pxiblic. A few days ago Mr David Jones offered for sale by auction the Otago Hotel, Eevell street, hut the bidding not being sufficiently high no sale was effected. We hear, however, that Mr Thos. Liddell (Liddell and M'Leod) succeeded yesterday in disposing of tho premises by private treaty for L 340, to Mr E. H. Cox, a well known hotel keeper in Auckland, who intends to locate himself in Hokitika, and convert the Otago into a first-class hotel.
