Serious disturbances have taken place in Sicily. Numerous bands from the mountains took up entrenched positions in Palermo and could not be driven out. The Government acted with great energy. Fourteen battallions of troops were landed on the 16th September, and irumediately advanced against the insurgents, but were opposed, and daily fighting took place till September 22nd, when the troops had full possession of the city, the insurgents were dispossessed, and 200 of them arrested. A considerable quantity of firearms were Seized.
An obstinate engagement has taken place between the Cretan army and the Turks and Egyptians. The former was defeated with' the loss of, 3000 men. The Governor-General of Crete had ordered a general arming of the Turks on the island. The latest intelligence from Crete says that in an engagement near Mileca the insurgents were defeated. Four districts offered submission. The Turkish force on the island was 30,000.
