COMMERCIAL SUMMARY.
Commercial operations for the month current from our last Summary have not been particularised by any material fluctuation in staple commodities, supplies having run very evenly with tho demand. The increaso in population noted in our last, continues, and it is very satisfactory to note again, that business is in a healthy and satisfactory conditionImports for the month have been heavier than during the period embraced in our last report ; but our requirements have been in proportion. Slocks are not found heavier than the spring and .summer demand warrant; shipments advised are calculated to keep the market fairly supplied for a short time, and the experience gained by importers and shippers, as to the requirements and absorbing capabilities of this market, will, no doubt, check anything approaching to overstocks. Wines and spirits have come into the market freely. Demand for first-class brandies continues without alteration in prices. Geneva, whisky, and old torn, are in good supply, and have not moved from last quotations. Wines have not been taken into stock freely ; enquiries are for better classes. Beer in bulk (British) has been more enquired for, Marian's, and Bass' No. 4, having the preference ; the consumption of local brew continues to increase, an index of the quality we presume. Beer in glass lias met with butlittle attention, lower prices having been accepted. Provisions of all kinds have been in good supply. Hams and bacon have been placed at low rates. Butter has come forward freely, and a considerable decline has been submitted to. Cheese lias been for some time scarce, and must now leave a good margin to importers. Candles have mot with a further reduction, consequent on full stocks. The new tariff, noted in our last summary> though not then finally passod, has been slightly altered ; one item— butter — quoted afc id (one halfpenny per pound) has been fixed at Id per pound for duty. Bbaicdy, in good supply, at., for Martell's palo, in bulk, 8s 6d to 83 9d ; Hennessy's 8s 3d to 8s 6d per gallon ; other brands, 7s 6d to 8s ; dark not enquired for ; case, MarteH's, 28s ; Hennessy's, 32s per case. Geneva freely offered, for JDKZ (3 gals), 15s 6d to 16s. Whisky and Old Ton have been in better demand, without alteration in value. Wines have not been much enquired for ; fine sherries and good medium ports have sold ; lower classes neglected. Beee ix Bulk has met with bettor sale Bass' No. 4 and Marian's have been freely taken at from Lll to Ll2 per hhd. d.p. Hokitika and Nelson beer have an extensive sale* at from L 6 10s to L 7 10s per hogshead. Beer is Glass has not met with the demand anticipated for the season. Blood's stout, 16s to 16s 6d; Byass', 14s to 1 5s per doz, are the ruling rates. Tennant's ale is offered at 16s to 16s 6d, Outside brands neglegted. Provisions continue to come in freely. Bacon and hams — Sinclair's, Is 4d to Is 5d rcerlb; other good brands g:> into consumption at a shaclo lower. These two items are not in excess : the season and the scarcity 0^ fresh meat tending to raise their value. Butter. — The high price ruling in this market for some time has been irresistible, and shipments have come forward heavier each week, with the usual result — a falling mnrkefc, prime colonial only being accepted here. Really good Sydney has been sold at auction for Is Id j and Wellington at Is 6d. We quote current rates at Is 6d to Is 8d per lb. Cheese continues scarce ; for good English — say Cheshire and Cheddar large & North Wilts, and Cheddar loaf, Is 5d to Is 6d may be quoted. Dunlop, in tins, Is 3d to Is 4d. Port Cooper, arriving in good condition, Is sd. (Greater care in packing the latter items would result move favorably to shippers.) Oilmen's Stores continue in good supply. Tho reduction in duty has given an impetus to consumption ; prices remaining stationary. Candles have further declined, and may bo I quoted — for Nevas, Is 3d to Is 4d ; Belmonts, Is 2*cl to Is 3£d. Fruits, Deied, remain without alteration, with the exception of currants, which are more plentiful, and have slightly receded from our last quotation. Tea.— In this article we have no alteration to note. Tho market has been very fairly supplied with a quality better meeting our requirements than as previously noted ; the enquiry being for a good class of strong to fine congous ; inferior being quite unsaleable. Flour has come forward during the mouth in quantities suitable to our requirements ; prices having ruled steady. First-class Adelaide was in good supply "early in the month, with a downward tendency. An improvement during the lastfew days has taken place, and best brands of Adelaide have been enquired for afc Ll9 to Ll9 10s. Californian and Chilian finding buyers at LlB to LlB 103. Oat 3 are plentiful. 63 4d to 6s 6d have been realized at auction during the week. BRAN, 2s 8d to 2s lOd. Maize, 7s 6d to Bs. Chatf is heavy in stock, realising Ll6 10a to LlB 10s per ton. Potatos— Good Taieris are scarce, and have realised at auction, Lll io Ll2 per ton,
