The political world has been marked by scarcely anything worth record. On the 21st inst, in the Legislative Assembly, the Government were defeated by a majority of two, on amotion for the production of papers respecting the recent changes in the Customs department. Since then, a motion for the appointment of a commission to inquire into the Customs department has been carried. ' The subscription fund to relieve the widows .and orphans made so by the recent wrecks along the coast now amounts to L 2413.. . The Bertrand and Kinder affair his ngaiu come forward. The AttorneyGeneral has obtained leave fiom the Privy Council at Home to appeal against the decision of the Sydney judges setting a&ide the conviction of Bertrand for the murder of Mr Kinder. His discharge has been refused. It is said that Mrs Kinder aud her other paramour ('Jackson) have returned to Sydney. Mrs Kinder has recently been living with her father in Hokitika, where she was barmaid at an hotel.
The lunatic Cameron has been tried for the murder of Dr G-rceuup. lie pleaded Not Guilty, and a verdict of acquittal was returned, on the grouud that he was insane. The unfortunate man was remanded to his former custody in Paramatta Lunatic Asylum.
