Mr Williams (of Thorn and Bullen), draper, residing; in Revell street, stated that on Saturday night, about six o'clock, he missed a pair of trousers which had been hanging outside his shop. He saw the prisoner walking across the street with a pair of trousers slung over his arm, which turned out to be the missing pair. The trousers were produced and identified by the witness by a private mark placed by him on the ticket attached to the trousers. Sergeant White proved the at rsst of the prisoner, who, after making a rather long and rambling statement about his having gone to the " wrong shop," was sentenced to one month's imprisonment with hard labor. LtiNAcy. — Jeremiah Murphy was brought up from Okarita, charged with being of unsound mind, and remanded until the 23rd inst., for medical examination. Larceny. — WilliamShortill was charged with stealing three buckets, of the value of fifteen shillings. It appeared that the prisoner was engaged on the 18th inst. to Cart a pdrtion of the cargo from the William Miskin to the flagstaff. After unloading his dray, and as he was returning to the steamer, he was observed by a constable to stand up in his dray and throw a bucket a distance of about twenty yards from the track. The constable asked him his reason for so doing, upon which prisoner denied, at first, having thrown it, but subsequently stated that he had thrown it there out of the way of the other drays going backwards and forwards. The constable, on searching round about, found two more. He then arrested Shortill, and charged him with stealing them. Mr Samuels, ironmonger, was called, and stated that the buckets were consigned to him, and bore his brand, which he pointed out. Nothing fresh was elicited in the cross examination by Mr O'Loughlin, whoappearjed for the prisoner. Mr Hall (of Hall and Finlay) was called by counsel as a witness to the prisoner's character, but was unable to say anything either good or bad of him. The prisoner was then remanded until to-morrow (this day) to enable Mr O'Loughlin to produce other witnesses as to prisoner's character. Shortill was in the meantime admitted to bail. Mr Cassius and Mr Godfrey ("carter) became sureties for his re-appearance. Larceny. — William Sullivan, Labau Brown, and William King were severally charged with stealing a small quantity of soap from the wreck of the William Miskin. Each of them told his own story — a very lame one, but failed to convince the Bench, as they averred that they had taken it not knowing there was any harm in doing so. They were all sentenced to one month's imprisonment, with hard labor. The Court was then adjourned until eleven o'clock to-morrow (this day).
