West Coast Times. WEDNESDAY, JULY 25, 1866.

By the Auckland, which arrived from Melbourne yesterday, wo have our files of English papers. The mails may be expected by coach from Christchurch this evening. The pressure of news obliges us •to defer all discussion of local topics, together with the report of yesterday's proceedings in the Supremo Court.

For the resume of English news we publish this morning, we are indebted to the very able compilation of the London correspondent of the Melbourne " Argus." '

It will be seen that the late telegram annouueing the commencement of war in Europe, the flight of the Pope from Rome, and the entrance of Garibaldi at the head of an armed force, into Venetia, if not accepted as a hoax, is at least discredited ; and Messrs Greville k Co. have explained, that, although forwarded to them by their agents from Colombo, they find that it w,as not a part of Reuter's message. On this subject, the " Argus" says :— -" Matters in Europe at the latest dates, we are glad to say, were not quite so bad as they were described to be in a telegram to Reuter's agents here from Galle, dated London, 13th June. It was there stated that Garibaldi had entered Venetia, aud that the Pope had Sed from Rome. We gather from the latest Colombo papers (18th Juae) that the telegram referred to was a hoax, arising out of a stupid trick played upon one of the Colombo papers. Published in the •^Ceylon Times Extra.," on the 16th June, it found its way in due course to this colony."

As some misconception has arisen as to tho bank reported to have suspended payment, under tlie designation of the Oriental and Commercial Banking Company, we extract the following from the y Colombo Observer" of June 10, with reference to the position of the Oriental Banking Company which has branches in the colony, and has long enjoyed a high reputation in commercial circles. The "Observer" says:— "While so much distrust in banking institutions has been created by the intelligence received from Europe, but especially from Bombay, it is satisfactory to notice, that the old Oriental Banking Company is ablo to huld its own, and to help its neighbors. The ' Times of India ' mentions that the help rendered by it to a bank in Bombay was no less than LIOO,OOO sterling." Full details of the financial crisip iv England are given in our other columns. j We reprint in a Supplement the disa rous intelligence from the neigh I boring colonies of shipwrecks and los" of life, which was published in the j " Despatch " of last evening.
