FROM THE CHRISTCHURCH PAPERS. July 5, 7.25 p.m. Sailed — Phoebe, for Lyttelton. Arrived— Wellington, from Lyttelton. The perjury case of Russell v. Barton was dismissed. The Bench remarked that the proceeding resembled persecution rather than prosecution. Barton addressed the Magistrates, hoping they would not allow further proceedings being taken against him. He stated that three actious were pending against him — one for malicious prosecution, damages L2OOO ; another claiming from him and Miller's trustees the value of Mevora run, LSOOO. July 6, 7.46 p.m. . Arrived — Zephyr, from. Chili, with flour ; Lindsay, from Lyttelton. July 7, 7.10 p.m. Arrived— Geelong, from Lyttelton. The cargo of the Zephyr, from San Francisco, comprises 4082 quarter sacks, 4793 half sacks flour, 833 bags wheat, 4000 feet of timber, 1000 fence pickets. The Zephyr brings intelligence of one of the most terrible disasters oh record, which .occurred at San Francisco, on April 1 7. Two boxes of nitro-glycerine exploded, causing great devastation and loss of life. Sixteen persons were killed, four fatally injured, and thirty more or less injured. Numerous instances of hair-breadth escapes are narrated. The damage done is not known, but it is believed to be immense.
