HOKITIKA LIVE STOCK MARKET REPORT FOR THE MONTH OF NOVEMBER, 1865.
Jones, M'GtAsnAJf and Co. report i— This market wns fully supplied during tho month, nnd especially towards the concluding days, large quantities of stock of oil description having nrriyed all at ouco by numerous steamers nnd sailing vessels. Prices havo consequently slightly receded. The amount of stook actually introduced, and submitted for salo up to 30th November, has been— Of fat cattle, 450 head ; calves, 10 ; sheep, 060 j and pigs, 100. While thero are in tho offing (on board largo stcameis), and at the Arahura river, fivo miles from town, altogether 200 head cattle and 500 sheep. The long-continued heavy gales of wind prevailing of Into, has doubtless beon the caiiso of tho delay in^ the arrival of many of the vessels freighted with stock, iftn'd the oonaequcnt unprecedented glut Tho quantity of stock, wore thoro only tho usual paddock accommodation here, as elsewhoro, would bo of no Jinportanco, for the consumption which has been gradually on tbo increaso during the past three or four months, is quite up to the supply, only that it cannqt, under existing oirOumstances, bo properly regulated. Henco the inevitable variations in supply and fluctuations in priced. We aro doing our best to avert the
evils attendant on sucfi a store of things, and fervently trust that in a short time wo shall be in a position to recoivo stook arriving either by sea or overland, in a paddo6k of 300 acres, pbs 1 gessingthat most essential requirement— good and abundant gia'ss ftrid clover. This \vould bo a great boon both to the importer 'and consumer, and would # tend very materially to determine something like fixed prices for cattle and sheep. Fat Cattlk— During the month we have penned and sold through our yards 160 head of cattle, of which 30 were- ship cattla, arrivals -from Nelson and Tioton ; these varied considerably in quality, and in price, ranging L 27 for inferior, to LSO per head, for .good prime bullcks. Messrs Evans and Holt's 50 head (overland) a choice and level lot, averaged L 33 10s all round. Messrs liarsoh and Thomson 46 head, light weights, but nice ripe cattle, L 2-7 12s per head, other lots at about the same range. We quote, first quality L 5 and medium L 4 per 100 lbs. Cattlo by the overland route are considerably more in favor with tbo trade than ship cattle in consequenco of the 'approach 'of warm weather, and their" being free from bruises, whioh cannot bo avoided in ship cattle. CaiiVßs— Only I'O were introduced, and theao wero to order. Fat ShKKf .— We sold the wholb'of 960 sheep introduced, all of which came by sea. Best sheep realised 60s ; second quality, 435 ; and two small lots, poor and light sheep, $6s. Wo quoto pood primtt sheep as wdrth C6s ; medium, 40a ; for inferior sheep wo can givo no quotations. The very large number just now in the market will operate slightly against these figures, but a week will get prices pretty nearly as given by us. Fat Lamus— None. A score cr two fn towards Christmas (if really good) would command good rates. Pias— The supply (190) were all sold in our yards. They were principally small store?, and averaged about 60s each. Several, very well bred pigs among tho lot. Whenever such were submitted good biddings occurred. Good sows are worth from L 7 to LlO, and porkers in proportion. Horses — The horse market very dull, scarcely any transactions worth recording. Good draughlers in demand, but limited in number. JONES, M'GLASHAN & CO., Stock Solesraon, Hokitika.
