During tho remainder of tho passage light winds and hazy weatiior prevailed. She made tho land in tho vicinity of the Groy on tho Oth inst., and crossed tho Ilokitika bar safely on the Bth. She brings a full general cargo to ouv port.
The steamer William Miskin hns for soveral days been on Itaster'B slip, and is now undergoing an external ovorhaul under proper inspcclion. When the work shall bo completed tho vessel will be in a much superior condition to what she has been at any timo since sho has been employed in these waters — Ctago Daily times.
Tlio schooner Caledonia lms ogam made n Satisfactory trip to Ilokidkn, and a rapid return passngo, though impeded by boiiio licnvy weather. Anotlier schooner, with doublo- topsails, lias 'anchored at tho Heads, and has been signalled ns tho Stranger, from Scio, but It is presumed that some mistake has happened in tho exchange of signals — Otago Daily Times, ' The schooner j\ilia, which has arrived from Melbourne, via Ilokitika, is a fine sea boat of 31 tons, which "lias been purchased by Mr William Kennedy of tho firm of Moody & Co. , .Totty street, for the New Zealand trade Sho made the trip from Melbourne to Itokitika in eight days, six hours, and delivered her cargo in good condition. Tho Julia is commanded by Gapt. Hbcnczer \Vyso, lato of the steamer Lady Barkly, nnd formerly captain of Lord DufTorin's yacht Foam, on her voyngo to tho Arctic regions. Captain Wyso also commanded tho steamer Ilotham in her search for Burke nnd Wills. lie reports having left Ilokitika on tho 18th October, with light variable winds up till Friday, 29th; and till tho 30th had nothing but strong gales of wind from south to west, with ft very heavy sea running. On the 20th tho cross sea was so heavy, that tho vessel's pitching pitched the fore-topmast over tho bows. On tho 21st had to heave tho vessel to for 10 hours. On the 22nd was hove to for 12 hours. On tho morning of tho 24th, nt 3.45 a.m., a strong breezo at the time, with heavy head S.W. sea nnd heavy rain, the mate at tho helm, Georgo Blays, seaman, was forward, and by some mantis fell overboard, and no one saw him till the mate heard him call out a-stern. Tho vessel was woro short round soon after, and stood to whero the voice was heard. Laid tho schooner to. and called on him, but got no answer; waited till daylight and looked nil about, but could sco nothing of him. He had on him at the timo a good deal of clothing and a heavy pea jacket, also a largo pair of digger's boots full of nails. Theso'must have taken him down at onco. This happened in lat. by act. 107 dog. 8 mm. 15 seo. E. On Wednesday, 25th, had a very heavy gale from tho S.W., with a frightful broken sen running; was hove to for 30 hours, the vessel making fearful weather. On Sunday, 20th, sighted the Solnnder Island, bearing S.E. by E. half E. 20 miles. At 4 a.m. on tho 30th, passed the Bluff Head and at 8 p.m. was off Capo Saunders, in a dead calm ; arrived in port Chalmers at 11.20 p.m., and camo to an anchorage. — Otago Daily Times,
