PORT OF HOKITIKA SIGNALS.
1. Ball and red flag at tho mast head . high water, take tho bar. 2. Ball and blue flag, half mast : Half flood, wait for tide. When the bar jnny safely bo attempted at half tide, whether flood or ebb, tho red flag will be at tho mast head over the ball, denoting the state of tide. 3. Ball on the towor mast cap, and white flag : Ebb tide, bar dangerous, 4. No sigual : Do not attempt tho bar. 6. Red painted arm, pointed to tho righthand, entering from seaward : More to the south. 6. The other arm, pointed to the left hand, entering from seaward : Moro to the north. 7. The arms up and down with the mast : As you go. When more than one vessel is crossing the bar, the foremost vessel will bo piloted in, the others following in her wako. On a movable polo in front of tho signal mast, the two in one showing tho fair way, will be hoisted (if necessary) to show the set of tho current on tho bar' thus :—: — A red aud white pendant — to tho North- ward ; A square yellow flag — to the Southward. On tho flagstaff not in tiso for the piloting, signals, at high wator tho depth in feet on tho bar will be denoted by Marryatt's code. A red light is hoisted on the signal mast on the south spit each night, visible at from threo to four miles. Thero will bo nn anchor and chain, and line attached, on the South Spit, and boat and boat's crew in readiness at high water, every tide, to. assist .any vessel coining oxer tho bar.. When tho bar is only fit for steamora to take, a red flag will be hoisted on the north flagstafi". Wto'en for sailing vessels^ a red flag and ball. Masters of vessels aro particularly ropucsted to attend to the small tidul flng on the spit, as tho small tidal flag and the largo flag in ouo takes them over the bar.
